Out of season there is not much to do during the week. On Fri the whole island changes, several bars have live music, check the local papers, try Lucy’s Palm Palm, Sandy Ground, or Round Rock, Shoal Bay. On Fri go to Johnno’s Place, Sandy Ground; on Sun to brunch at Roy’s Place, Crocus Bay, draught beer, then around 1500 at Johnno’s Place for a beach party. When the music dies people go to the neighbouring bar, Ship’s Galley for the night shift.


Uncle Ernie beach bar on Shoal Bay has a live band playing all day on Sun. Madeariman Reef Restaurant, Shoal Bay, soca, calypso, reggae on Fri, Sat, Caribbean night with Spraka Wed. Gorgeous Scilly Cay has live daytime music on Wed, Fri and Sun, T5123. At the weekend the Dragon Disco opens around midnight. Mirrors Night Club and Bar, at Swing High, above Vista Food Market, juke box with music from 1960s to now, happy hour nightly at 1900-2000, live entertainment at weekends. The Dunes, reggae and folk music from the Caribbean during March at the full moon at Rendezvous Bay. The Pumphouse, in the historic Anguilla road Salt Co Factory, Mon-Sat 1900-0200, eat, drink, dance or relax, T5154.

In high season the resort hotels have live music, steel bands etc, check in the tourist What We Do in Anguilla monthly magazine. Look for shows with North Sound, Missington Brothers the most popular bands. Dumpa and the Anvibes is led by Pan Man Michael (Dumpa) Martin, who has recorded a CD/cassette of a blend of local music.

There is no theatre but plays are sometimes put on at the Ruthwill Auditorium. The Anguilla National Creative Arts Association (ANCAA) has a performing arts section, the National Theatre Group, which has training workshops and performs at hotels during high season. The Mayoumba Folkloric Theatre puts on a song, dance and drama show at La Sirena, Meads Bay, on Thur nights, T6827.

Festivals

Carnival is at the beginning of August (the Fri before the first Mon), when the island comes to life with street dancing, Calypso competitions, the Carnival Queen Coronation, the Prince and Princess Show, nightly entertainment in The Valley and beach barbecues. The Anguilla International Arts Festival is held every other year (next in 2001, dates to be announced) and includes workshops and an arts contest.
