Gourmet restaurants in hotels are expensive. There are many excellent places to eat on the island for all palates and all budgets, from the elegant to beach barbecues. Most of the restaurants are small and reservations are needed, particularly in high season.

Also expensive, in a restored 18th-century home of the island’s administrator, known as Warden’s Place, with 100-year-old rock oven, Euro-Caribbean style, chef Leonard ‘Smoke’ Sharplis prepares 5 or 7 course menus, open Tue-Sat dinner only, pastry shop open daily.

Roys Bayside Grill, sandy ground. Located on the beach, Roy's specializes in flame-broiled meats and seafood. It is a great family restaurant for lunch, dinner, drinks, Friday Happy Hour or Sunday Roast Beef! Also under the same ownership is Roy's Place in Crocus Bay. open daily.

Zara’s Seafood Restaurant, Shoal Bay, in gardens of Alamanda Beach Club, T3229. Local chef, Rotary Club meets here Thur 1800 for dinner. One of the best Anguillian gourmet chefs is Shamash. Chef Shamash has moved back to Shoal Bay (hip-hip-hooray), reopening Zara's Restaurant at Allamanda Beach Club, after several years at Overlook with Chef Dion.

Le Beach Bar & Restaurant, oldest restaurant on Shoal Bay East, T5598. Steakhouse, surf’n’turf, salad bar, pizza, "Le Bar", a chic Café Francais, has recently opened on Shoal Bay East. If you want an elegant touch right on the beach you can try this great spot which features a sea food grill, a variety of interesting salads, baguette sandwiches and French Platters. open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, happy hour 1700-1830, near Shoal Bay Villas.

Trattoria Tramonto & Oasis Beach Bar, Shoal Bay West, next to Blue Waters, T8819, northern Italian chef, serious Italian cuisine, lunch casual 1200-1500, sunset champagne cocktails 1700-1800, dinner 1900-2130, Try the delicate lobster ravioli in truffle-cream sauce, or go for a less Italian option: kangaroo steak. For dessert, don't miss the authentic tiramisu. Madeariman Reef Restaurant, Shoal Bay, T3833, breakfast, lunch and dinner, barefoot or elegant. Because the restaurant is part of the new Madeariman Beach Club resort, it is often open for breakfast and dinner as well, especially in the high season. Call to confirm.

Pepperpot, The Valley, opposite high school, T2328. Open 0700-2200, local food, local customers, especially after work, rotis, salt fish, curried goat, patties, takeaway available. Cora’s Pepperpot is the prized possession of Ms. Cora Richardson. Ms. Cora is proud owner of one the most authentic and charming eateries in Anguilla. Tel: (264) 497-2328

Hibernia, Island Harbour, T4290. Run by French and Irish couple, international menu with influences from their traveling experiences, closed low season. Hibernia is a small, intimate and elegant restaurant, with 11 tables set in an open air West Indian house by the sea. In 2000 Mry Pat & Raoul added an art gallery as well. It specializes in contemporary Asian Art collected during their annual travels. It is open during restaurant hours or by appointment.

Fat Cat, Main Road, George Hill, T2307. Meals to go from the freezer, Fat Cat in George Hill packages hors d’oeuvres, entrées, salads, and desserts ready to heat in the oven or microwave. picnic meals, pies and cakes, open 1000-1800, closed Sun.

Gee Wee’s Bakery & Catering, on West End main road, T6462. Breads, cakes, pastries, sandwiches, Jamaican jerk chicken and pork, parties catered for, eat in, takeaway or delivery service. Vista Food Market, South Hill Roundabout, T2804. Good selection, cheeses, meats, pâtés, wines, beer, Cuban cigars etc, The closest major grocery store to the West End resorts is Vista Market in South Hill, just before the Sandy Ground roundabout. This grocery store is known to cater to the tourist crowd. It has special gourmet items and a liquor department, a reasonable selection of cheeses, pate, sausages, and other deli-type items, fresh tomatoes, and nice bananas. Ashleys Supermarket, South Valley. Open Mon-Fri 0700-2030, Sat 0700-2200, has a good range including produce from other islands. There is now a smooth Anguillian Rum, a blend from other islands matured in oak barrels designed to be drunk on the rocks rather than in a punch.
