The island sustained considerable damage from Hurricane Luis (September 1995) but has now fully recovered. Hurricane debby in 2000 passes to north. Hurricane Omar in 2008 was the system that had the greatest effect on Antigua & Barbuda and the Leeward islands. Omar flooded homes and battered crops on the Caribbean island of Antigua before it spun north. Intense flooding was the main feature accompanying the passage of Omar although tropical storm force winds also affected parts of the Virgin and Northern Leeward islands.
It is said that Antigua "has 365 beaches, one for each day of the year!". The historic harbour, Nelson's Dockyard together with Jolly Harbour provide protected anchorages for many visiting yachts. Antigua Sailing Week held early in May each year attracts yachts from all over the world. It is one of the largest regattas to be held annually. Antigua also hosts a week-long carnival in July of each year. The island offers fine deep-sea fishing with Atlantic Blue Marlin weighing in excess of 600lbs being regularly tagged and released. Casino gambling is available in certain licensed establishments and on-site in one or two of the many fine hotels. Antigua is a frequent stopover for cruise ships whose passengers enjoy the historic (and narrow) streets of St. John's.
