Antigua and Barbuda Yachting Calendar

The coasts of Antigua and those of the sister island of Barbuda are ideal for yacht cruising and racing, with constant trade-winds, and many harbors for exploration. Easily a week could be spent cruising around these picturesque Caribbean islands. Barbuda has shell laden beaches, so long they dip below the horizon!

The sister island of Barbuda has shell laden beaches so long that they dip below the horizon. English Harbour and Jolly Harbour make ideal yacht headquarters. For English Harbour's fine facilities, see: Nelson's Dockyard.

Antigua is centrally situated for Caribbean cruising. There are good airline connections with North America and Europe. The 48th Annual Antigua Charter Yacht Show 2009 will be held on December 7th - 11th, 2009. This year's show, as in the past, will take place at the Nelson's Dockyard Marina in English Harbour, the Falmouth Harbour Marina and the Antigua Yacht Club Marina both located in Falmouth Harbour.

The main events are:

  • Classic Yacht Regatta, hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club,
  • Antigua Sailing Week This has become one of the top 10 regattas of the world. It is run under the auspices of the Antigua Hotels and Tourist Association.
  • "Antigua Yacht Show", operated by V.E.B. Nicholson & Sons.

Other events of the year organised by the Antigua Yacht Club are the annual High Tide Series, Green Island Race, informal Round-the-Island-Race and the "after work" Thursday afternoon races for all-comers.

For many years Antigua prided itself on being both the physical and metaphorical ‘yachting centre of the Caribbean’. Sailing today is much more about what goes on in and around Antigua rather than the arriving visitors from across the Atlantic and a large part of Antigua’s tourism income and employment is now based on the yachting industry. Much is done to attract the Mediterranean yachts planning to winter in the Caribbean to come to Antigua and the yachting season starts with the Antigua Charter Yacht Show.

Antigua and Barbuda Marine Association (ABMA) work closely with the O.E.C.S. and E.C.L.A.C. in its efforts to develop the yachting industry across the region to communicate across the Caribbean Yachting Industry and instrumental in setting up of Caribbean Marine Association (C.M.A). Also providing information and feedback to assist the Ministry of Tourism.

Antigua Yacht Club organize Antigua Sailing Week, Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, Mega Yacht Challenge and the other events.

Aside from the large regattas, the club is active in getting youth involved in sailing with the Youth Sailing programme, and also runs regular races in and around Antigua waters.
