Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta

Antigua is renowned throughout the world for its regattas and other on water events. This regatta has become one of the foremost classic yacht regattas. The Star Clipper, HMS Rose, Sea Cloud, Eagle, and ships from Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, as well as the Sail Training Association, have all shown a strong interest to join over the past few years.

There is plenty to chose from and added to the Antigua's yachting calendar for 2009 is the RORC Caribbean 600 Mile Race which will compete with the Fastnet, Sydney/Hobart, South China Sea Race and the Bermuda Race as one of the world's great ocean races. For those who would enjoy seeing a number of classic yacht sailing together there are events around the world that provide ample opportunity.

The rules of entry demand that all ships should have a long keel, be of moderate to heavy displacement, be made out of wood or steel, and be of traditional rig and appearance. With constant trade winds, the Easterly Caribbean island is perfectly positioned for this popular sports event. The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta is held every April: traditional craft built of wood and steel make this a show that’s more about beauty than speed. Yacht Scoringprovides you with the capability of scoring multiple racing circles containing multiple divisions (handicaps) and multiple classes within each division. At this time, scoring is available for One Design, PHRF (ToD), PHRF (ToT), IRC, CSA, GLMRA and Portsmouth handicap systems.

The Classes:

  • Vintage
  • Schooner
  • Classic
  • Spirit of Tradition

The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta; hosted by the Antigua Yacht Club is major Caribbean yachting event draws some of the most beautiful and graceful sailing vessels ever built. These classics include schooners, gaffed rigged boats, yawls and magnificent ketches and sloops. Chartering an original classic or spirit of tradition yacht will be one of the most amazing and unique sailing experiences available. You could either take part in the sailing and racing or just relax and enjoy the view as the yachts go by. The Antigua Regatta is one of the rare occasions where you can witness many famous traditional, vintage and classic yachts powered up under full sail.

There are events every jump-up night with choices of venues, mostly offering something special, for example the Welcome Party with the band Itchy Feet, and the Sail Maine party serving complimentary delicacies such as Maine Lobster Chowder and copious refreshments. A stunning area of shades of blue and green, white sand and conch shells everywhere. Conch is a local food and the beautiful shells lie everywhere broken on the beach but live ones can also be found at your feet in very shallow water. The Live Music Night at the Yacht Club enticed many musicians from different yachts to give excellent renderings. Singers from Canada, Northern Ireland, South Africa and the United States all contributed their own brand of music.

Antigua Sailing Week One of the best sailing regattas in the world, the annual Stanford Antigua Sailing Week welcomes participants from all corners of the globe competing for the chance to win this prestigious race. The Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta has maintained a steady growth, hosting between 50 and 60 yachts every year and enjoys a wonderful variety of competitors including traditional craft from the islands, classic ketches, sloops, schooners, and yawls making the bulk of the fleet, together with the stunningly beautiful Spirit of Tradition yachts, J Class yachts, and Tall Ships. All of which makes a wonderful spectacle of sail, in the ideal trade wind sailing conditions of the Caribbean.
