Shopping in Aruba

Renaissance Mall, Aruba

Shopping in Aruba is filled with surprises and fun. While the Main Street of Oranjestad remains a timeless shopping mecca, the surrounding malls are continually redefining themselves. More and more sparkling shops with opulent and prestigious international brands are taking over the retail landscape, mingling with exclusive one-of-a-kind boutiques. Glittering jewelry stores brimming with diamonds, watches, gold, silver and precious stones abound. Nearby malls and busy store-lined streets have an eclectic array of retailers selling everything from perfumes and cosmetics, state-of-the-art electronics, beach and resort wear to lingerie, fine linens and china. In sharp contrast is the harbor-front market with humble vendors selling their wares and souvenirs in open-air booths. The downtown area is easily reached by bus; there is a bus stop in front of hotels and resorts with transportation to the colorful new bus station where there is ample parking for rental cars, just short walk to the shopping locales.

In addition to Caya G F (Betico) Croes shopping areas include the Port of Call Market Place, Seaport Village Mall, Harbour Town, The Galleries, Strada I and II and the Holland Aruba Mall. A wide range of luxury items are imported from all over the world for resale to visitors at cut rate prices. Liquor rates are good, but prices for jewellery, silverware and crystal are only slightly lower than US or UK prices. There is no sales tax. There are also local handicrafts such as pottery and artwork, try Artesanía Arubiano, on L G Smith Blvd 178, opposite Tamarijn Hotel, T837494, or ask the Institute of Culture, T821010, or the Aruba Tourism Authority, T823777, for more information. Galeria Harmonia, Main St, St Nicolas, exhibits and sells local artists’ work, T842969.

Bookshops: Van Dorp in Caya G F (Betico) Croes is the main town centre bookshop. The light and airy Captains Log in the new Harbour Town development has a few books and reading material but is mostly souvenirs. Many bookshops in the hotels have some paperbacks. Prominent Bookshops are:
