Shopping - New Providence

Shops are open 0900-1700, Monday to Saturday, but some close at 1200 on Thursday. As there is no sales tax and many items are duty-free, buying imported goods can save you about 20-50%, but shop around. The English Shops have Irish linen and gifts from England. Look in the Perfume Shop for French perfume. Try John Bull for watches and cameras. For unusual gifts look in Marlborough Antiques, West Bay, Coin of the Realm, Charlotte St, or Best of the Bahamas, east of the square. For clothing see the Androsia boutique in Mademoiselle’sand Radisson Mall, Cable Beach, batik fashions from Andros. There are also international names like St Michael, The Body Shop, Benetton, Gucci and Colombian Emeralds all in Nassau. In general, however, buy everything you could possibly need before you arrive as regular import duties are high. Most of the smarter, tourist-oriented shops are on (or just off) Bay St. For everyday shopping most people use suburban centres, of which the most convenient is in the Mackey St-Madeira St area. Super Value supermarkets have good variety of breads and salad bar (sold by the pound). The main fish and produce market is on Potters Cay. Other fresh fish markets are Montague Foreshore, next to the Sailing Club and on West Bay St, opposite Fort Charlotte and at the entrance to Crystal Cay. The best book shop is Logos Bookstore, at the East Bay Shopping Centre, just past the Paradise Island Bridge, good selection and good quality. Also reasonable is the book department of the Island Shop on Bay St, but most cater for ‘holiday reading’. Service in shops is often poor, be prepared to wait. Film developing at the Island Colour Lab in the Island shop, opposite the Straw Market, on Bay St or Mr Photo chain on the Market Range off Bay St.
