But one of the highlights of a visit to Belize is diving. The 200-mile Great Barrier Reef, longest in the Western Hemisphere, also appeals to sport fisherman. Conveniently located 300 yards from the reef, Ambergris Caye offers comfortable seaside accommodations, good dive equipment, charters and expert instruction.
Most arrive in Belize City, which is divided in two by an old drawbridge and distinguished by British Colonial architecture. The cityscape is dominated by St. John's, the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, dating back to the 19th century. Hotels are few but of generally good quality. A little investigation turns up some interesting cuisine and a little low-key nightlife.
But tourism reaches far beyond the city. Tiny townseological sites are displayed at Belmopan, the capital. Climbers scale the Maya mountains and Victoria's Peak while wildlife watchers favor the sanctuary at Crooked Tree.
