Fly BVI is a small charter airline with 7 aircraft which is often cheaper and more convenient than a scheduled flight if there are a few of you, to Anegada US$125 one-way T4951747, 800-1-FLY BVI, F4951973, www.fly-bvi.com . Pack light, there is limited luggage space on the small aircraft. Alternatively take a day trip to Anegada, US$110 per person including taxi, air fare, lobster lunch at the Big Bamboo, contact Nikki and Barry Abrams, owners of Fly BVI.
Car: There are only about 50 miles of roads suitable for cars. Drive on the left. Maximum speed limit 40 mph, in residential areas 20 mph. Minimokes and jeeps can be hired on Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. Jeeps may be more useful for exploring secluded beach areas. Car rental offices (or Police Headquarters) provide the necessary temporary BVI driving licence (US$10) but you must also have a valid licence from your home country.
Car Hire: It is advisable to book in advance in the peak season. Rates range from US$40-45 per day in winter for a small car, US$45-70 per day for jeeps, usually about US$10 less in summer. Credit card needed with US$500 deposit.
Taxis: BVI Taxi Association, T4942875, island tours arranged. Taxi stands: in Road Town, T4942322; on Beef Island, T4952378. Taxis are easy to come by on Tortola and fares are fixed, ask for a list or get one from the tourist office. The fare from Beef Island Airport to Road Town, Tortola is US$15 or US$8 if shared. On Virgin Gorda, Mahogany Taxi Service, The Valley, T4955469, F4955072, offers tours and day trips, as well as car and jeep rental.
Bus: There is a local bus service on Tortola with cheap fares (US$2-4) but erratic timetable. Scheduled (but nowhere near actual) times are: Road Town to West End, 0700, 0835, 1000; West End to Carrot Bay, 0730, 0900, 1030. From Carrot Bay it goes to Road Town, East End and back to Road Town. Ferries: The ferry fares between Tortola and Virgin Gorda are about US$20 return and from Tortola to Jost Van Dyke US$15. Always check availability and departure times in advance. The North Sound Express, T4952138 has six daily crossings Beef Island-Spanish Town-Bitter End, 30 minutes, reservations essential. To Leverick Bay (for Mosquito Island), 25 minutes, US$20 one way, 1300, 1545, 1730. Return 0645, 0845, 1145, 1445, 1615. Bus service (not included in fare) to and from Road Town waterfront (Pussers) and Beef Island ferry dock. Speedy’s , T4955240, has four crossings Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday between Virgin Gorda and Road Town, six on Tuesday and Thursday, and two on Sunday, also a service continuing to St Thomas, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Smiths Ferry Services, T4942355, 4954495, cross from Virgin Gorda to Road Town then West End on their way to St John and St Thomas four times a day Monday-Saturday, three times on Sunday. Peter Island Ferry, T4952000, has eight daily crossings from the Peter Island Ferry Dock, Road Town, to Peter Island, US$15 round trip. Jost Van Dyke Ferry Service, T4942997, four crossings a day between West End and Jost Van Dyke Monday-Saturday, three on Sunday. Marina Cay Ferry, T4942174, runs between Beef Island and Pusser’s Marina Cay eight times a day.
