The Netherland Antilles- The ‘3 S’s’

The Netherland Antilles, The ‘3 S’s’, Saba, Sint Eustatius (Statia) and Sint Maarten are 880 km north of the rest of the Netherlands Antilles group, the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao), which lie off the coast of Venezuela. Each has a distinct character and flavour, St Eustatius being the poorest, Saba the smallest and despite some development still deserving of its official title, ‘the unspoiled Queen’, and Sint Maarten the most developed and wealthy.

Lacking in natural resources, they all depend to a greater or lesser degree on tourism for their foreign exchange revenues, but are developing their potential in different ways. Saba’s strength is the richness of the underwater world surrounding the island and is noted for its pristine diving locations. Sint Maarten has the best beaches and resorts, while St Eustatius promotes its historical associations.

Although the ‘3 S’s’ precede the ABC islands, see also ABC Islands History information for the Netherlands Antilles group.
