Telephone Services

It is possible to dial direct to any country in the world. Blue public telephones in Georgetown only allow collect calls overseas; phone booths have overseas, three-digit codes printed inside. Yellow phones are for calls to local areas, G$3 per call. Some businesses and hotels may allow you to use their phone for local calls if you are buying something – usual charge about US$0.05. Overseas calls can be made from the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company office behind the Bank of Guyana building; open daily till 2000 (arrive early and be prepared for a long wait), or from the Tower Hotel (more expensive but more comfortable). To USA US$1.25 per minute; to UK US$1.35 per minute. Calls are subject to 10 percent tax. Travel agencies may allow you to make overseas collect calls when buying tickets. Hotels add high extra charges to phone bills. Canada Direct, dial 0161; UK direct 169. Fax rates are in line with phone rates. Most hotels have faxes.

Postal Services

Overseas postal and telephone charges are high. Parcels sent abroad have to be weighed and checked by customs before scaling. Take all materials and passport; choose between ordinary and registered service.
