Beaches & Watersports

Haiti’s best beaches are far from the capital, on the Caribbean & Atlantic coasts. The Gulf of La Gonâve beaches, the only ones that can be reached within an hours’ drive, are not particularly good, but popular for a day trip out of the capital at weekends. Those west of the capital are poor. The best of what’s available is to the north.

The first beaches you get to are rather gritty, but the sand improves as you go further north. The backdrop is of arid, deforested mountainside but the calm, clear, shallow water is excellent for children. The closest is Ibo Beach, on an island near Km 30 of the Route Nationale 1, but it is dirty, covered in rubbish and not recommended. The Côte Des Arcadins, a 20-km stretch of beach hotels, begins 60 km north of the capital. The hotels all have bars and restaurants, and charge admission to day visitors. They may be crowded with wealthy Port-au-Princiens or aid agency staff at weekends. There are also public beaches with no hotels. The Arcadins are three uninhabited, sandy cays 3 km offshore which are surrounded by reef. The diving is excellent. Isle La Gonâve is also visible and dive boats visit the wall offshore.
