Accommodations

Martinique offers a wide range of accommodation from the modest family-run auberges scattered over the remote and spectacular north, to the huge five-star complexes of Pointe du Bout and Trois Ilets, the main tourist area, in the south. 20 hotels with over 60 rooms are classed as Grand Hôtellerie. About 100 smaller places are grouped as Relais Créoles.


The Sucrier Créole is awarded to hotels with a high quality of service and hospitality. Gîtes, furnished holiday apartments and bungalows are widely available, some connected to hotels. The tourist office at the airport is helpful and will telephone round the hotels to get you a room for your first night if you have not booked beforehand. Generally, prices are high. Some hotels add 10% service charge and/or 5% government tax to the bill.

Pointe du Bout and Les Trois-Ilets

These are the main tourist centres, and are well equipped with shops, nightclubs, casinos, a marina, facilities for golf, watersports and tennis as well as several beaches. Trois-Ilets benefits from the facilities of Pointe du Bout and the pleasant beaches of Anse Mitan and Anse à l’Ane, a 20-min ferry ride from Fort-de-France.

The main hotels are LL-AL Meridien, 97229 Trois-Ilets, T660000, F660074. Recently renovated huge modern complex with 295 rooms and traditional bungalows dating from the 1960s in splendid, mature landscaped grounds. The marina village is fun to walk through (you could take a picnic lunch, food and drink is expensive). Excellent evening entertainment, sometimes the national ballet company. LL Bakoua (named after traditional Martiniquan straw hats), T660202, F660041, a Coralia hotel. Créole ambience with touch of sophistication, a/c, TV, phone, minibar, 139 apartments and rooms, two restaurants, excellent buffet of local dishes, tennis, fitness centre, pool, on beach, evening entertainment includes the ballet, MartiniCarayou que-style cabaret in English and French.

LL-L Novotel Coralia , Pointe du Bout, 97229 Trois Ilets, T660404, F660057. 201 spacious rooms in seven acres of gardens overlooking Fort de France bay, right on beach, walking distance to shops, restaurants at marina, two restaurants, watersports. L-B Hôtel la Pagerie, pool, T660530, F660099. A-B Auberge de l’Anse Mitan, T660112, F660105. A friendly, family-run hotel with apartments and rooms. B-C Le Nid Tropical, rents studios and has a lively beach bar and restaurant, T683130, F684743. Also camping, see below. B La Bonne Auberge, T660155, F660450. Again basic but clean, offering underwater fishing and watersports.

Fort-de-France

AL-B Squash Hotel, 3 Boulevard de Verdun, T630001, F630074. 108 modern rooms, TV, minibar, pool, three squash courts, gym, dancing room, saunas, jacuzzi, billards, conference facilities. A-B Impératrice, T630682, F726630, rue de la Liberté. 1950s décor and architecture, apparently unchanged since it was built in 1957. B La Malmaison, rue de la Liberté, opposite the Savane, T639085, F600393. Good and clean, spacious, recommended for price range but some rooms smell of cigarettes, higher prices during Carnival. Both these hotels have lively bars and restaurants frequented by a young crowd. B-C Le Gommier, 3 rue Jacques Cazotte, T718855, F730696. One of the oldest buildings in town. Has clean spacious rooms and good continental breakfasts, friendly management. In the elegant suburbs of Didier is the B-C Victoria, Route de Didier, 97200 Fort-de-France, T605678, F600024, on hillside overlooking bay. Popular with businessmen as well as holiday makers, 37 rooms, good restaurant, a/c, TV, phone, fridge, buses into town every few minutes, pool. The C Balisier on 21 rue Victor Hugo is also very centrally located with a view over the port, T/F714654. Good value. C Carib, 9 rue du Matouba, T601985. Newly renovated, a/c, wrought iron beds, hardwood floors, very clean and appealing, good location. Recommended. On rue Lazare Carnot is C Un Coin de Paris, T700852, F630951. Small, friendly and cheap. Schoelcher, on the outskirts of Fort-de-France, is LL-L Framissima , T614949, F617057. Pool, tennis courts, gym, disco, conference facilities, restaurant, bars, casino, very fine hotel. Recommended.

Diamant

Miles of superb, uncrowded beach with magnificent views of coastal mountains and, of course, Diamant Rock. Ste-Luce

Outside Ste-Anne

To the north, is the Club Med Village Les Boucaniers, T767452, F767202. Lots of tennis and land based sports, waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, diving and golf at extra cost, no children under 12, 313 rooms, a/c. Atlantic Coast

LL-B La Frégate Bleu, T545466, F547848. Seven spacious, elegant seaview rooms, a/c, fans, kitchenettes, terraces, charming hilltop site, gingerbread trimmings, rooms decorated with antiques, Persian rugs, four-poster beds, helpful, English-speaking staff. B-C Chez Julot, rue Gabriel Perí, Vauclin, T744093. A modest but pleasant hotel, one street back from foreshore road, a/c. Restaurant, bar. A-B Les Brisants, T543257, F546913, at François provides good Créole cuisine. On the old NI, near Trinité, within easy reach of the Caravelle peninsula, A-B St Aubin, T693477, F694114. A magnificent colonial-style hotel, once a plantation house, splendid location, views and exterior, but interior badly damaged by 1960s refurbishment, 15 a/c rooms.

AL Le Village de Tartane is near the pretty fishing village of Tartane, T580633, F635332. A/c bungalows with kitchenette around pool. In Tartane, B-C Madras, hotel and restaurant, on the beach, spotless rooms, seaview or road view, T583395, F583363. A-C Hôtel Primerêve, Anse Azérot, just south of Sainte Marie, T694040, F690937. 20 rooms, 80 suites, new hotel on hillside, elegant, 5-min walk to superb beach, secluded cove, pool, good restaurant, tennis, snorkelling, easy access to rainforest. LL Habitation Lagrange, Le Marigot, T536060, F535058. 16 rooms, one suite, a/c, four poster beds, terraces, luxury, in tropical gardens, 18th century buildings, decorated in colonial style, private, romantic, beautiful pool, tennis, superb restaurant, in the rainforest, 20 mins from beach.

Basse Pointe

AL-A Plantation de Leyritz, T785392, F789244. A former plantation house set in beautiful grounds with a lot of insects because of all the fruit trees and water, glamorous accommodation, excellent restaurant serving local specialities, efficient and friendly service, pool, tennis courts, health spa, discothèque. In the remote, northern-most commune, Grand-Rivière, a small fishing village surrounded by rainforest and close to several idyllic black sand coves, D Chanteur Vacances is a simple, clean hotel with only seven rooms, shared facilities, restaurant, T557373.

West Coast

One of the few hotels within easy reach of the ruined town of St-Pierre is C La Nouvelle Vague, T781434. Five rooms only (doubles), rooms over bar, overlooks beach. On Carbet’s enormous black sand beach are C Le Cristophe Colomb, T780538, F780642, good value, and the more upmarket LL-AL Marouba Club, T780021, F780565, which has apartments and bungalows, pool, disco, CP or MAP rates.

Finally, convenient for the airport, at Ducos in the plain of Lamentin, C Airport, six rooms, basic a/c, hot water, no restaurant, T560183.

Youth Hostels

Fédération des Oeuvres Laiques (FOL) has a hostel, along the Route de Didier, Rue de Prof Raymond Garcia, T640410, 640017, head office at 31 Rue Perrinon, Fort de France, T635022, F638367. The hostel is several miles from the town centre and difficult to find, only one small FOL sign. No public transport in evenings, taxis can make staying here expensive. Rooms, C, sleep two or four with shower and toilet, basic, renovated 1994.

Camping

The most convenient campsite for Fort-de-France is at Anse à l’Ane, Le Nid Tropical campsite, 70F for two people if you have your own tent, 100F, if you rent one, also cabins and apartments with kitchenette, T683130, F684743. A small bakery/restaurant on the beach serves cheap meals, bread and pastries. On the south coast, Ste-Luce has a good campsite with adequate facilities in the VVF Hotel, but the beach is not nice. There are no tents for hire. T625284. Camping Municipal at Ste-Anne is a popular campsite with a pleasant situation in a shady grove right on the beach, 50F, cheap food available. Next to the Club Med, it is on the cleanest and nicest beach. You can rent tents from Chanteur Vacances, 65 Rue Perrinon, Fort-de-France, T716619, around 35F per day.
