Post offices are open from 0700-1800 and Sat mornings. The main post office is on Rue de la Liberté and always has long queues. Post card to USA 3.70F


Telecommunications

Nearly all public telephones are cardphones except a few in bars and hotels which take coins. At the PTT office in Rue Antoine Siger, just off the Savane, there are numerous card and coin phones and Télécartes (phone cards) are sold. These can also be bought in most newsagents, cafés, and some shops for 36.50F upwards. A 50-unit card (about US$8) lasts nearly 4 mins when phoning North America; a 120-unit card costs about US$16. Don’t get caught out on arrival at the airport where there are only cardphones. Try the tourist office where they are very helpful and will phone round endless hotels to find the unprepared new arrival a room. You can not have a call returned to a payphone. To make a long distance credit card or collect phone call from a pay phone: buy the smallest card possible and insert in phone, dial 19 00 11 to get USA direct English speaking operator for credit card or collect or dial USA DIRECT calls. Other lines available for Sprint and MCI. To use phone card dial 19 00 plus 10 digit number. Check in the phone book for other numbers. To dial non-French islands in Caribbean dial 191 plus 3-figure code and local number.
