Climate: Average temperature is around 27°C in the daytime and 23°C at night. Average rainfall is 45 inches a year. Average water temperature in the sea is 26°C.


Documents: See main Netherlands Antilles section under Curaçao - Travel Information. There are no customs regulations as Statia is a free port.

Hospitals & Medical Facilities: The Queen Beatrix Medical Centre is on Prinsesweg, T82371 for an ambulance, or T82211 for a doctor. 2 doctors are on 24-hr call. Outpatient hours are 0800-1200, Mon-Fri, or by appointment, from 1400, Sat-Sun from 1000 for emergencies only. The resident dentist is Dr JM Tjien A Fat, at the Medical Centre Mon-Fri 0800-1700, T82371/82211 or at home T/F82750.

Official Time: Atlantic Standard Time, four hours behind GMT, one ahead of EST, all year.

Voltage: 110 volts A/C 60 cycles.

Money

  • Currency: The currency is the Netherlands Antilles florin or guilder, but US dollars are accepted everywhere. Credit cards are not widely used (Amex hardly ever accepted, Visa and Mastercard better). Check at hotels and restaurants. US$100 bills often not accepted.
  • Departure Tax: Airport departure tax is US$5 for Antilles, US$10 international. If you visit for the day and pay departure tax on St Maarten, you do not have to pay the tax when you leave Statia. If you pay the tax on Statia and are in-transit on St Maarten you do not have to pay tax on St Maarten. You will need to show your tickets and boarding pass for your next flight at the tax window.

Banks: Barclays Bank, Wilhelminaweg, T82392. Open Thur, Fri 0830-1530. The Post Office Bank, Post Spaarbank, is open Mon-Fri 0730-1200, 1300-1630 except Fri when it closes at 1645. The Windward Islands Bank is by Mazinga Gift Shop, open Mon-Fri 0830-1200, 1300-1530, T82846, F82850.

Clothing: No topless bathing anywhere on the island and men are not allowed to walk without shirts on in public streets.

Public Holidays: New Year’s Day (fireworks at midnight), Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Queensday (30 April), Labour Day (1 May), Ascension Day, Statia Day (16 November), Christmas Day, Boxing Day.

Places of Worship: Anglican, Apostolic Faith, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Bahai, Baptist, Pentecostal and Seventh Day Adventist
