Getting Around in Sint Maarten

Land

Car: Foreign and international driver’s licences are accepted. Drive on the right. The speed limit is 40 km per hour in urban areas, 60 km per hour outside town, unless there are other signs. The roads on both sides of the island are very busy and full of pot holes, making them rather unsafe for mopeds or walking, particularly at night. Hitchhiking is possible but allow 30 mins waiting time; it is not recommended for women.

Car Hire: There can be a shortage of cars or jeeps for hire in high season. It is advisable to request one from your hotel when you book the room. Out of season car rental is inexpensive. Many car hire companies have offices at the airport or in the hotels; free pick up and delivery are standard and you can leave the car at the airport on departure. Prices range from US$25-55 per day. Car hire companies include: Risdon’s Car Rentals, Front St, T23578; Avis, Cole Bay, T42316; Hertz, Juliana Airport, T54541; Budget, Philipsburg, T44038, Cannegie Car Rental, Front St, T22397; Empress Rent-a-Car T463638 and at hotels; Opel Car Rental, Airport, T44324; Speedy Car Rental, Airport, T23893; Roy Roger’s, Airport, T52701, US$30 plus US$10.

Taxis: There are plenty of taxis, which are not metered so check the fare first, which is fixed according to your destination. Trips to other beaches or tours of the island can be arranged with taxi drivers: island tour US$35 plus US$2 for each additional passenger; hourly rate US$10 plus US$2.50 each additional 15 mins. From Philipsburg to Juliana airport US$10-12, Dawn Beach US$18, Marigot US$10, Mullet Bay US$5, Pelican Resort US$8, all for 2 passengers, additional passengers US$2 each. Night tariffs are an extra 25% 2200-2400, an extra 50% 0001-0600. Pick up taxi at the square in Philipsburg (T22359) or Juliana airport (T54317).

Buses: There is a fairly regular bus service during the day between Philipsburg and Marigot but no regular bus service between Philipsburg and the airport. Mini-vans or tour buses offer tours and are generally cheaper than taxis. In French Quarters and St Peters, and from Marigot to Grand Case on the French side. After 2000 there are few buses. The best place to catch a bus is on Back Street. Buses run along Back St and Pondfill and only stop at bus stops. Outside towns, however, just wave to stop a bus. Fare is usually US$0.85 in town, US$1 for short trips, US$2 for long trips. There is no regular bus service between Philipsburg and the airport although the route to Mullet Bay Resort passes the airport. Buses on this route run mostly at the beginning and the end of the working day (although there are a few during the day) and drivers may refuse to take you, or charge extra, if you have a lot of luggage.

Bicycles: 2-wheeled transport hire from Super Honda, Bush Rd Cul-de-Sac, T25712; Moped Cruising, Front St, T22330; OK Scooter Rental, at Maho Beach Hotel and Cupecoy Resort, T42115, 44334. Mountain bike hire from Tri-Sport Rent a Bike, Airport Rd, T54384, US$15 per day, delivery and pickup available, guided tours.
