Sint Maarten - Getting There

Airport Information: ALM, T54240/54210. Air Guadeloupe, T54212. KLM, T52120. LIAT, T54203. American Airlines, T52040. Air France, T54212. Air St Barthélemy, T53151. BWIA, T54646. Ogden Aviation, T54234. Continental, Northwest and USAir, T54344. Lufthansa, T52040. Winair, T54230/54237, F54229/52002. The international airport is Juliana, at Simpson Bay. A taxi into Philipsburg costs US$10-12. If you need to eat while waiting for a plane, the best place is a bar/restaurant across the street with a supermarket.


  • From Europe: Air France, 6 times a week and AOM French Airlines, 4 times a week from Paris, KLM, twice a week from Amsterdam in a joint operation with ALM.
  • From North America: New York (American Airlines, Continental, TWA), Charlotte (US Air), Miami (American Airlines), Orlando (American Airlines), Philadelphia (US Air, American Airlines).
  • From Caribbean: There are many from: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Martinique, Grenada, Guyana, Nevis, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, Saba, St Barthélémy, USVI (St Croix and St Thomas), St Eustatius, St Kitts, St Vincent, Puerto Rico, St Lucia, Jamaica, and the British Virgin Islands (Tortola), with a variety of regional and international carriers.
  • From South America: ALM also flies from Caracas and Valencia via Curaçao.


There are no long distance sea communications except cruise ships which usually stay 5-9 hrs.

Ports of Entry: (Dutch/French flag) Philipsburg and Marigot.

Boat Documents: Yacht clearance is done at the port, both in and out. Off season hours 0900-1200, 1300-1600 Monday-Friday, 0900-1200 Saturday, longer hours in season, page port Authority for Sunday clearance.

Marinas: No fee yet for Simpson Lagoon bridge. Dutch bridge openings 0600, 1100, and 1730, outbound boats first. The French side opens Monday-Saturday 0900, 1400, 1730, Sunday 0900, 1730. Good groceries and laundry in Lagoon. Radio net VHF 78 at 0730. Send mail with someone flying out or Federal Express. Duty free Caribbean headquarters for boat parts, outboard motors, beer.

Anchorages: Great Bay, Orient Beach, Oyster Bay, Marigot, Simpson Bay, Simpson Bay Lagoon Marinas: Great Bay Marina, Bobby’s Marina, in Simpson Bay Lagoon: Simpson Bay Yacht Club, Island Water World, Port de Plaisance Marina, Palapa Marina. Mail/fax/phone: Dockside Management and The Mailbox. Charter fleets include Jet Sea, Moorings, Nautor Swan, Sunsail, Stardust ATM, Sun Yachts.

Entry Requirements: U.S. citizens may stay up to three months providing they show proof of citizenship in the form of a valid passport, or an original birth certificate with raised seal and photo ID. Naturalized citizens may show Naturalization Certificate. Resident aliens must provide their Alien Registration Green card or a temporary Green card which allows them to leave and re enter the U.S. Visitors who intend to stay more than 90 days must apply for a residency permit from the office of the Lt. Governor. All visitors must have an onward ticket and a confirmed room reservation before arrival to the island.
