Beaches & Watersports

St Barts is a popular mid-way staging post on the yachting route between Antigua and the Virgin Islands. Boat charters are available, also courses in, or facilities for, windsurfing (Toiny is the windsurfers’ favourite beach), snorkelling (very good, particularly at Marigot), waterskiing and sailing. Windsurfing Paradise, Baie de Saint-Jean, T277122, is a Bic Centre, offering lessons and equipment rental.

Eden Rock Beach Club Gleveau Henri, also at Baie de Saint-Jean, T277477, has Fanatic equipment for rent, while at the Saint-Barth Beach Hotel, Grand Cul-de-Sac, Wind Wave Power has Mistral gear at their windsurf school. Surfboard rental (not windsurfing) at Hookipa, T277131. Sailing and snorkelling cruises are offered by several catamarans. They go to Colombier beach, Fourchue Island, Tintamarre, Anguilla or St-Martin. Half day cruises cost US$55-60, whole day with lunch US$90-95, sunset cruises US$46, or with dinner, US$70-80.

Some beaches are more accessible than others, most uncrowded. The main resort area is Baie de Saint-Jean, which is two beaches divided by Eden Rock, the most visited beach with several bars and restaurants open for lunch or a snack, watersports, but no waterskiing, small boats, snorkelling rentals, ideal for families, good windsurfing, safe swimming, some snorkelling. Motorized watersports are only allowed 150 m off the beach. Others are Lorient, Marigot, Grand Cul de Sac on the north coast, Grande Saline, Gouverneur on the south, and Colombier and Flamands at the northwest tip, to name but a few.

To get to Gouverneur from Gustavia take the road to Lurin. A sign will direct you to the dirt road leading down to the beach, lovely panoramic view over to the neighbouring islands, where there is white sand with palm trees for shade. A legend says that the 17th century pirate, Montbars the Exterminator, hid his treasures in a cove here and they have never been found. Also a very good spot for snorkelling.

Colombier beach is the most beautiful on St Barts. It can not be reached by car but is well worth the 20-30 minutes’ walk during which you have majestic views of the island. Park the car at Colombier, there are several trails going down to the beach. There are also several day tours by boat from Gustavia. Flamands beach is of very clean white sand, bordered with Latania palm trees. The surf can be rough, watersports available. In Corossol is the Inter Oceans Museum, a private collection of 9,000 seashells, corals and stuffed fish from all around the world. T276297. Tue-Sun 0900-1230, 1400-1700 (Mon groups only). 20F. Petite Anse de Galet, in Gustavia, 3-5 minutes’ walk from Fort Karl, is also known as Shell beach because it is covered in shells, not sand. Trees give shade and swimming is safe, shelling is of course extremely good.
