All the large hotels have a selection of restaurants and there are snack bars and restaurants all along the west coast. Most places add on a 10 percent service charge, the menu usually specifies and it is rarely left to your discretion.


In Castries Kimlans, Derek Walcott Square, T4521136. Upstairs café and bar with verandah, cheap, serves local food, open 0700-2300 Monday-Saturday. Café Panache is a new restaurant located on the Derek Walcott Square, offering local and international cuisine. Chung’s, on the corner of Coral and Brazil Street, upstairs above Starlite, T4521499. Open 1100-2000 or so, pleasant and airy, good food, inexpensive, for EC$16.50 you get soup, 3 choices from the menu and coffee, MSG used in a few dishes, if you don’t want it, say so, will also cater for allergies, such as wheat, just ask, everything delicious. Recommended. Aft Deck, La Place Carenage, T4521902. Harbour view, top floor, popular for lunch.

South of Castries on the Top of the Morne, Bon Appetit is recommended for its daily specials and spectacular views, but is not cheap, meals from EC$35, T4522757. Also on the Morne, San Antoine, T4524660, just closed for a year. A plantation great house, lovely gardens, elegant dining room, open for lunch and dinner except Sunday, expensive, voted most elegant restaurant by St Lucia Hotel Association, reservations requested, also offers sunset champagne cruise on the brig Unicorn with steelpan and dancing, then welcome cocktail, 3-course dinner and coffee, all transfers included, US$80 (cruise alone is US$40). In the same area The Green Parrot, T4523399. 4-course dinner EC$95, serves excellent lunches daily, lots of Caribbean specialities and good selection of tropical vegetables, have a cocktail in the lounge before dinner, the chairs are worth it alone, shows Wednesday, Saturday, ladies’ night Monday.

North of Castries is D’s Restaurant, Edgewater Beach Hotel, T4537931. Indoor or on patio, relaxing setting on beach, good selection on menu, mainly lunch time, creole special EC$20. Recommended. Froggie Jack’s, tucked away at Vigie Cove, T4581900. Great views of harbour at sunset, open for lunch and dinner, run by former executives at Anse Chastenet and Jalousie.

Coal Pot, outstanding, at Vigie Marina, T4525566. French chef, the place to eat at the moment, reservations essential. Vigie Beach Bar, beside Rendezvous Hotel serves good rotis and inexpensive cold beers; in Gablewoods Mall there are a selection of fast food outlets open from 0800-2100 daily: Mexican, Southeast Asian, pizza, ice cream, best rotis at El Burrito, EC$8, huge, Tiggis, T4524815, is recommended, a/c, very good food and service, popular, open Monday-Saturday 0830-2200, soups, meals, baguettes, sandwiches, desserts, free salad bar with all dinners, choose your own fresh sauce; Friends at Casa Vigie, first floor, just below the Venezuelan embassy. Patisserie and café, very good sandwiches, attractive, open Monday-Thursday, Saturday 1000-1800, Friday 1000-2400, lovely walk from here to the Vigie lighthouse. Waves restaurant, bar and dancing at Choc Bay, short distance past Gablewoods Mall. Beach setting, very pleasant.

Further north in the Rodney Bay area, Memories of Hong Kong, opposite Royal St Lucian hotel, T/F4528218. Chinese chef from Hong Kong, expensive but excellent, you can inspect the kitchens, open Monday-Saturday 1700-2230. The Lime serves good meals and snacks at moderate prices, T4520761. Friendly, open from 1100 till late, closed Tuesday. Highly recommended. Triangle Pub, across from the Lime, T4520334. Open daily 1100-late, local food and barbecue, eat in or take out, live bands, pan, jazz.

Surf ‘N’ Turf restaurant and bar, T4528303. Caribbean specialities, main courses EC$35-55, open daily from 1100, happy hour 1800-1900, has fine art gallery of the St Omer family. Recommended. Razmataz, opposite Royal St Lucian, T/F4529800. Indian, good, friendly, open from 1600, closed Thursday. Pizza Pizza, T4528282. Waterside garden dining.

Shamrock’s Pub, T4528725. 6 TVs, pool tables, darts, pub grub, open daily. Capone’s, is a restaurant in the speakeasy style of the 1920s, open for dinner only and quite expensive, but attached to a pizzeria, open from 1100, both closed Sunday-Monday, with prices starting at EC$12, T4520284. Eagle’s Inn on waterfront just past Rainbow Hotel, T4520650, seafood a speciality, grill, wet bar, health food store. Charthouse, T4528115. Closed Sunday, known for its steak, seafood and spare ribs, rib steak highly recommended.

Miss Saigon, T4517309. Southeast Asian cuisine, open daily. Recommended. Snooty Agouti, night place with jazz/blues, gourmet coffee, cocktails, food, gooey desserts, breakfast waffles, art gallery, boutique, book swap, backgammon, Internet, open until midnight. Further along the road and directly on the beach at Reduit is Spinnakers, T4528491. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, with full English breakfast EC$26, happy hour 1800-1900, excellent location, though food and service suffer when it is busy, good too for coffee and desserts, they also hire out loungers for EC$5 per day.

Key Largo, on the highway, T4520283. New building, wide patio, not interested in serving between lunch and dinner, delicious, authentic, huge Italian pizzas, reasonably priced, if you like hot food ask for the hot sauce, but be careful; Mel’s & HH’s, between Islander and Pepper’s, T4520363.

Traditional English pub food, Sunday roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, steak and kidney pie, Cornish pasties, etc, closed Monday, open from 1230. In the marina complex at Rodney Bay is The Bread Basket for breakfast or lunch, open Monday-Saturday 0730-1700, Sunday 0730-1200; La Créole, at the marina, T4500022. French Créole cuisine, open daily for lunch and dinner. Le Boucanier, T4520351. Open daily from 0700, poolside barbecue. The Bistro, close to marina, seafood a speciality, also English pub grub and daily specials, happy hour drinks, nice setting on waterfront, open daily except Thursday from 1700, T4529494, for sale 1999; opposite is Burger Park and Miniature Golf, T4520811, open 1100-2200, closed Thursday, eat in or take out, good selection including vegetarian, playground, 18-hole miniature golf. Mortar and Pestle, T4528711. Waterfront bar and restaurant, mini-mart, dinghy dock, at Harmony Marina Suites, open daily 0700-2300, live entertainment Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.

In the far north Cap Estate is The Great House Restaurant, T4500450. Traditional tea from 1630-1730 is worthwhile for watching the sunset, and affordable, happy hour 1730-1830, dinner expensive, 1900-2200, closed Monday. Portias on the road to Corinth is a fairly new restaurant with a large selection of affordable meals.

South of Castries, Marigot Bay has several hotels for lunch and dinner, but JJ’s Restaurant and Bar on the road down to the bay is a cheaper alternative, T4514076. Specializes in fresh local dishes and seafood, open from 1000 till late, Wednesday night recommended, reasonably priced crayfish, crab and lobster (in season), Friday night jam session. Chateau Mygo, T4524772. St Lucian-Indian cuisine, open daily 0700-1100, serves traditional hot bakes and cocoa tea for breakfast, credit cards accepted, reservations advised. Shack Bar & Grill, open daily from 1500, dinner 1830-2200.

In Soufrière, The Still specializes in authentic St Lucian dishes, T4597224. Open daily 0800-1700 it is not cheap but serves local vegetables grown on site. Spotlight near Home Guesthouse and Barclays Bank. Good local food, tuna and kingfish recommended, lunches and dinners EC$16-25. Jacquot, on Church Street, try the Jacquot Special cocktail.

The Humming Bird is a good place to eat and take a swim, T4597232. French, Créole and seafood, daily specials, reasonable food but reported overpriced, good views, open from 0700. Dasheene, at Ladera Resort, T4597323. Good food, award-winning Austrian chef cooks with local produce, wonderful views, worth coming here even if only for a drink just for the views. Recommended.

The Purity Bakery near the church in the main square serves breakfast with good coffee, rolls and cakes; Le Haut Plantation on the west coast road 1 kilometre north of Soufrière. Huge TV in sports bar, open 1000-2100, also 6 rooms, small. At Étangs Soufrière, on the road to Vieux Fort, is The Barbican restaurant and bar, T4597888. Run by the very welcoming Mr and Mrs Smith, local food at local prices, good home cooking, not sophisticated, but clean, popular. Recommended. The Old Courthouse, T4595002. Bar, restaurant, batik gallery, French Créole and Southeast Asian dishes, waterfront dining, open daily, credit cards. Recommended. Vieux Fort, Il Pirata is recommended, T4546610, Italian restaurant on the beach, prices from EC$25, attached to a motel, open Tuesday-Sunday 0700-2130. Close to Hewanorra airport and near Club Aquarius by sign for beach cottages to rent is the Annex, T4546200. Open from 0900 to midnight weekdays, 1000-0200 weekends, good food, named after Crèole musical instrument and the long seed pods of the flamboyant tree. Sandy Beach restaurant and bar on the beach and on the highway .Excellent location, delightful stopping place, good food, a bit overpriced but not dreadful, have a swim and lunch.
