Trinidad and Tobago -Known as "the Rainbow Country," the twin island nation

Known as "the Rainbow Country," the twin island nation is home to people of African, Spanish, Chinese, British, French and Syrian descent. Over half its residents are Hindu and Muslim.

Trinidad, only eight miles from Venezuela, is home of calypso, pan music and Carnival. Port-of-Spain, the capital, is best seen on foot starting from the 200-acre Queens Park Savannah and fanning out in all directions to discover the technicolor culture and elaborate architecture.
Photographers and fans of opulence like The Magnificent Seven, mansions built by affluent, imaginative plantation owners.

Galleries, food and merchandise stalls at curbside, unique shops and restaurants of all kinds cover the cityscape.

Fort George and Fort Picton, both worth seeing, offer fabulous panoramas stretching as far as Venezuela.

Nature is noteworthy, too. The Asa Wright Center and the Caroni Sanctuary offer the best in bird watching. The Pitch Lake interests sightseers with industrial inclinations.

Tobago, just an air hop away, is largely peace and beaches. Scarborough, the capital, Fort King George, just outside town and the14,000-acre rain forest preserve are well worth visiting. The National Fine Arts Center sells local handiwork. It's also fun to shop for crafts in the many small shops and beach boutiques.

The island offers a selection of new and recently refurbished hotels with golf, tennis and a full complement of watersports. Buccoo Reef is a long-time favorite of snorkelers.

Little Tobago (Bird of Paradise Island) is a 450-acre sanctuary just off the northern coast near Speyside.
