The North Coast

North of Port of Spain is Maraval, just beyond which is the 18-hole St Andrews golf course at Moka (there is also a swimming pool, US$3 for non- members). The North Coast Rd branches left off Saddle Rd (which runs through Maraval back over the hills to meet the Eastern Main Rd at San Juan), leading to Maracas Bay, Las Cuevas and Blanchisseuse (see Beaches & Watersports).

There is a lookout point on the road to Maracas Bay at the Hot Bamboo Hut, where a track goes steeply down to Timberline (see Accomodations - Trinidad). The stall-holder can call the toucans in the forest, take binoculars to see them fly close and answer him. It is possible to walk to Maracas from Port of Spain in about three hours, best to take a maxi or route taxi to Maraval to avoid the traffic and then hike from there. The Northern Range locations for hiking are best reached from the coastal villages, where there are small hotels, guest houses and restaurants.
