The Battle of Waterloo

Governor John Kelly is a keen golfer and when he took over the Governor’s residence, Waterloo, in 1996, he soon had designs on the 20 acres of wilderness surrounding his new home. The overgrown land was attacked by a battalion of volunteer kindred spirits to create a nine-hole, par three course.

The acacia thorn bushes and vines fought back as trees not seen for years were exposed and park land appeared. The wilderness was finally dominated by a team from Her Majesty’s Prison and some heavy equipment operators who uprooted the big thorn trees. The opening of the golf club was planned for June 1997, the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, but actually took place in January 1998 with 43 players in the Governor’s Trophy competition. Visitors may pay their green fee at the Governor’s office – a slightly unusual arrangement. T9462308 and speak to the secretary, Cynara John.
